Following
a 10-hour heavy downpour in Lagos State Nigeria some days ago, the Nigeria Meteorological
Agency (NiMet) has issued a flood and heavy rainfall alert across the 24 states
in the 36 states of Nigeria will be affected. This is not the first time we
have been faced with the flood crisis and as such, should not be taken as a new
normal. We all need to know that, the root cause of this crisis is climate
change. It calls for us to address the “Elephant in the room which is to shut
down all fossil fuel investments or we risk more than just flooded states but
the loss of our lives. The climate crisis is a threat to our life. For a
developing country like Nigeria, climate shocks could put the country into more
debts since the cost for the economic loss and damage is worth millions of
dollars. It is safe to say that, the cost of inaction is more than the cost of action.
The time to act is now.
